Twas the Night Before Christmas, when all through the house, a tradition was born, with family and spouse…
From small kid time through college, our family would gather around the tree and each open one gift together on Christmas Eve. Because we attended mass on Christmas morning and couldn’t open presents until we returned home, the one present tradition kept my sister and I from getting too anxious at church.
During my many years with the ex pup daddy, Christmas day was spent on Maui or in Honolulu with his extended family, aunties, uncles and cousins. Christmas Eve was reserved for a quiet dinner with his folks and my sister in law. We’d exchange gifts and took a picture in front of the tree every year. It was always fun to look through that album and reminisce and see how we had changed over the years.
I realized that since my divorce and returning home to Maui, I no longer have any Christmas Eve traditions 🙁 It’s time to start a new tradition or two. Not sure what my new traditions will be but here’s a few ideas…
- A Christmas movie marathon, I love movies and a night of watching holiday movies while curled up in bed with a chill in the air coming down the mountain is just my speed. No lights except from oh Christmas tree…a big furry poi dog cuddle action.
- A signature drink, maybe a hot chocolate with a little Malibu rum or Kahlua. Or perhaps some sort of egg nog concoction.
- During the day Pandora’s Christmas Radio playing in the background while I finish last minute wrapping with Christmas goodies baking in the oven (stop laughing friends & family…anything is possible, it’s never too late to take up baking).
- A picnic dinner while watching the sunset in Wailea, a dinner out on the south side or a special home cooked meal with the family.
What are some of your Christmas Eve traditions? How about holiday movies and special holiday cocktails? Any recommendations?
