When I first returned home to Maui, I was tempted to find a little place in Haiku. I was aware of the cons of living in Haiku, it’s always wet, fighting da “paia town” slo mo traffic and possibly navigating a one way dirt road to get in and out of your hood every day.
If you take one look at this picture, you’ll get why I love Haiku. The outdoor spaces are spectacular. This shot is behind the BF’s sister’s place, a tucked away spot with complete privacy and room for two big dogs to run around. Can you imagine writing, reading or enjoying your morning coffee in a comfy chair on a backyard deck with scenery like this?
If you scroll thru craigslist rentals and check out the pics, there are a ton of charming little places to rent with a huge lot, beautiful greenery and wrap around porches. It’s a little off the grid but not too much. Still close enough to Paia to pick up some groceries from Mana’s, do some shopping or enjoy a dinner out.
Why didn’t I move to Haiku? My family has a big lot in Kihei and built out a space for me there. I feel so fortunate but I still dream of Haiku.
