If you grew up on Maui, then moved away, there are certain foods you’ll always miss and must indulge in as soon as your plane touches down at the Kahului airport.
Sam Sato’s noodles, Home Maid Bakery’s manju and Tasaka’s Guri-Guri top the “must eat” list for many a Mauian returning home for a visit.
The light, refreshing frozen sherbet is a little creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness. It’s the perfect last course, after school snack or omiyage. I prefer the strawberry but my boyfriend likes to mix it up with pineapple too. Back in the day, azuki beans topped all this goodness. After all these years, the price hasn’t changed much, $1.20 for two scoops.
If you’re traveling to another island, travel packs are available but I recommend you call ahead. Tasaka Guri-Guri is located in Maui Mall.
In 2001, Tasaka Guri-Guri was featured in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, read about the history of this fourth generation family business here.
