At the end of each year I select a new calendar for my desk at home. It doesn’t have to be big but it does have to be aesthetically pleasing and make me smile. Next year’s calendar is the 2013 Feng Shui Almanac.
The feng shui almanac is a beautifully illustrated calendar from the World of Feng Shui. Each day is marked with icons that indicate if there is a full moon or new moon and whether it is a good or bad day for travel, renovation, business and relationships. On the back of each month is an article or guide. Auspicious astrology grouping by season, affinity triangles by sign and the five elements of the human body are a few of the topics. The almanac is ~8″ x 7″ and is a standing flip calendar.
About a decade ago, I began a burgeoning interest in feng shui that began with my desperate search for restful sleep. I’ve been an insomniac my entire life. I either sleep poorly, wake up with anxiety or don’t sleep at all. So, I did what I always do when I’m trying to improve my life. I read everything I could find on the subject and stumbled upon feng shui. Following basic principles I rearranged my bedroom furniture, removed items stored under the bed, added a pair of lamps to the nightstand and moved my digital clock to another room. I slept better but never felt there was anything mystical involved. The idea that freeing your mind by surrounding yourself with open space, decreasing light disturbance and placing your bed in a place where you feel safe and secure made logical sense to me. Although I read many books and articles on feng shui, my efforts never extended past my bedroom. I didn’t consciously incorporate any of the practices to bring and maintain good fortune in my life in the areas of health and prosperity.
Although I’m not an avid participant, I find feng shui and its history interesting. I believe that ensuring our buildings are placed properly considering natural elements can affect the comfort and health of a dwelling’s occupants. I know that improper placement of furniture or too many distractions in a workspace or sleeping area can affect our subconscious creating stress and anxiety or make it difficult to rest or focus. I also believe there are years that we need to exercise more caution than others and other years are perfect for change and a bit more risk. I feel positive energy can enable us to take full advantage when an opportunity for good fortune arises while negative energy can distract us from seeing the opportunity directly in our path or leave us ill prepared for it. However, I don’t embrace the practice of placing plastic figurines or other objects in my home in the hopes they will bring positive energy and good fortune.
