Slow Food Maui promotes locally grown foods and culturally diverse culinary practices for health, pleasure and island food security in alignment with the Slow Food movement. The slow food movement envisions a world in which all people can eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet.
What does this mean for us on Maui?
We can improve our health, strengthen our community and take greater pleasure in food by buying local. Locally grown fruits and vegetables which are in season and picked at a later stage are generally better tasting, fresher and longer lasting. Shipping foods thousands of miles leaves a much larger carbon footprint. Buying local preserves green space and farmland in your community. Local businesses put more of each dollar back into our local community by spending more on goods and services, providing jobs and supporting charitable causes. Maui can increase its ability as a sustainable community if we all support our local farmers and ranchers like Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, Maui Cattle Company, Kula Fields and the Surfing Goat Dairy.
We can also grow our own herbs, vegetables and fruit. Raise chickens for our own supply of fresh eggs. Our family garden is filled with delicious mango, papaya, japanese cucumber, eggplant, arugula and eggplant.
We can choose to patronize restaurants and chefs who support the slow food movement by using fresh local ingredients in their dishes. The customer’s voice is the loudest and we can create a demand for locally sourced ingredients. Bev Gannon, Ono Gelato, Mama’s Fish House and Chef Susan Teton are just a few of our Maui chefs and dining experiences that strive to use locally sourced ingredients.
We can support our local food bank, domestic shelters and other support agencies. Food should be a right, not a privilege.
We can expose our children to the joys of eating local. Educate them on nutrition and sustainability. Help them create their own garden, enjoy family time together in the kitchen and participate in local agricultural family tours and events.
