I asked the perfect person for suit shopping tips, the force behind Pualani Hawaii, Iwalani Isbell, who’s own active mermaid lifestyle has inspired my favorite line of suits.
First, consider your level of activity. Are you more the catch a tan on the beach type or are you out there with your board catching the next big wave. You’ll want to choose a style to match your level of activity (we recommend no bandeaus for surfing!).
Do you have a little something extra around the hips? I know I do. Go for a bottom with a thicker band to avoid the dreaded muffin top.
Less is more! That’s right. Bottoms with less coverage can make your booty look smaller. Don’t be shy, give it a try.
Is your current suit causing you to have an achy neck? Forego the halters and get an over the shoulder strap style.
Tie side bottoms are versatile because they can be cinched down tightly for activities and loosened up for chillin on the beach. I’d also add there’s a little more room for weight fluctuations with the tie side.
Mauishopgirl’s own experience is that the bikinis with ties on the side flatter this not so skinny body. I’d always try to cover things up in the past but finally realized a smaller bottom with side ties was the best.
Visit Pualani Hawaii’s store in Waikiki or Kailua or their website. Also check out our post on Pualani here. You’ll find a wide variety of top and bottom styles in their four way European stretch fabric which will give you the fit that flatters. Photo courtesy of Pualani Hawaii.
