But first let’s get real…I’ve gained 35+ lbs, grown 6 inches on my waist (yikes!) and have gone from a relaxed size 2 to a snug size 10. I don’t fit into any of my old workout clothes. My friend Jodie (who works out hard every single day) had really good advice for me, “buy a couple of cute outfits”. Jodie also turned me on to almond milk for my smoothies; she’s full of good ideas. I didn’t argue as I’m a strong believer in feeling comfortable in your skin no matter what and that includes feeling good in your workout clothes. Since I’m sporting a Buddha belly, back fat and untoned legs, shopping for cute workout stuff was easier said than done.
All I needed is one well fitting top and shorts that I could buy in multiples. I always buy my workout tops from Lululemon and they now have a location in Paia (yay!). Lululemon tops are super durable and don’t retain the dreaded old BO leftovers, I’ve had some for years that have been to exertennis and outdoor spinning classes (super sweaty situations) week after week. Their tops aren’t as fitted as other brands (although you do have to try different styles on) but fitted enough to give you some shape. The length is also a little longer on certain styles. Sizing is in dress sizes (2 thru 12) unlike the S/M/L sizing in Nike and Adidas that I’ve always had trouble with. I chose the Power Y Tank, which has been a favorite style of mine. I didn’t see the Power Dance Tank in Paia (2nd row) but think it’s great. I have enough pieces for now but will definitely try this style out when I go down a size or two.
I had such a difficult time finding shorts! I used to be a diehard Nike running shorts girl but they’ve changed their cut in recent years and it doesn’t look flattering on my body type any more. I needed something that was a bit more relaxed on the legs without looking huge and ill fitting. I found these shorts at the Wailea Gap and LOVE them. Nice and slouchy, cut a little longer but still short enough for a 5’1″ petite. I bought these in the melon, a blue lavender, kiwi and this great purple abstract print. I saw a fit, trim and petite woman wearing these at Powerhouse and they looked great on her too. I’m hoping this is a regular style for the Gap that is done in different colors each season so I can buy more when I drop a size.
I used to be an all out Nike shoe fan too but I’ve been leaning more toward Asics recently for workouts and walking (I still prefer Nikes for tennis if I ever manage to get back on the court again, in an ongoing two year hiatus). The first pair is a Gel Uptempo and it’s made for speed and agility training. I don’t need a new gym shoe right now but will keep these in mind for later. My PT (pain & torture) showed me exercises a few years ago which I’d like to start up again that involves side to side jumps on and off a bosu ball. Great for agility on the court and to also strengthen my calf muscle, which has a tendency to stiffen up and even, tear. I have the 2nd pair and it’s the craziest shoe I’ve ever owned. I’m usually very old school tennis, as much white as possible, no flash. I was so drawn to these and decided I am not going to hide just because I’ve got some pounds to lose. Bring on the flash! The color pods on the side are reflectors too.

In Sunday’s post, I wrote about my health and fitness plans for April. I’ll be journaling daily on my progress at Sparkpeople.
Another great thing about Lululemon is they regularly hold great free events like yoga classes.
