My favorite place to eat on Maui, without hesitation, is Sansei in Kihei…
I hop in the CRV, hit the Pililani Highway and head to Sansei at least a few times a month.
Although Sansei has traditional sushi rolls and dishes, I enjoy their unique creations the best. The menu items that are inspired by Japanese cuisine but are all Sansei in terms of taste and innovation. Here’s a rundown of my favorites:
Shrimp Dynamite- a tempura shrimp tossed with a garlic masago aioli and drizzled with an unagi sauce on a bed of greens.
Sansei Special Roll – spicy crab, cilantro and veggies, dusted with furikake and topped off with a sweet Thai chili sauce.
“69” Roll – California roll inside out topped with masago and unagi.
Panko Crusted Ahi Sashimi Roll – ahi sashimi, arugula and spinach, wrapped in a sushi roll, coated in panko, flash fried and coated with their own mild soy wasabi butter sauce.
Dungeness Crab Ramen with Asian Truffle Broth – mmm, yeah the name says it all. Also served with cilantro, Thai basil and jalapenos.
I typically eat family style, sharing a variety of appetizers and sushi rolls but Sansei also has a full menu of entrees. Their sushi bar also has many more traditional sushi plates. Sansei has a full bar with a great wine, beer, sake and cocktail selection (pomegranate martini is my favorite).
You can see their full menu, hours and location at their site here. You can also see a slide show of some of their ono offerings (the lighting is very low in there so I had a tough time pulling off a good shot, my pic here does not do their food and presentation justice).
What are your favorite Sansei menu items?
