Uniques…Da Pop-Up at the MACC

It’s the week before Christmas and I assume many of you are doing the frantic OMG I’ll buy anything tango at the mall. My suggestion is to keep calm and shop on at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s pop-up gallery gift shop, Uniques.

#1 on my must go list for the next Kauai jaunt is a Hanapepe spot called the Workshop. I’d love to meet Shannon Hiramoto, tour her studio and try on ALL of her handmade up-cycled vintage pieces.

Shannon’s line, machine machine, is absolute perfection. I love her girlie yet edgy creations with an appreciation of all things vintage. Pretty colors in cute casual styles are ideal for our island lifestyle.

See her blog (great behind the scene peeks) and portfolio to get a feel for machine machine. Also be sure to find a local boutique near you or visit her online shop. Her instagram is freakin awesome too.

I also want to extend a warm mahalo to my posh bestie @oshariegirl for knowing me so well and turning me on to machine machine.

Once upon a time, it was a Friday night and I was sporting a new haircut. I had no plans and da BF was on Lanai laying tile. What’s a girl with no man, no plans and a professional blowout to do? I decided to hop over to Monkeypod Wailea to chill at the bar and nosh on gnocchi while watching surf flicks. (nom nom, we’re talking fresh chard, mushrooms, tomato and chevre, I daydream about Monkeypod’s gnocchi at least once a week)

As I was heading back to my car with a tummy full of gnocchi, I decided to take a peek in Otaheite. The display table was filled with gorgeous and colorful handcrafted wallets and clutches by Cleobella.

Proteas of Hawaii…The Gift Shop

I took a road trip to Kula Lodge a few weeks ago to run an errand. I was about to leave when I spotted a cute little cottage with pretty landscaping and protea arrangements on the porch.  I took a peek inside expecting a flower shop and and instead found a charming space filled with beach cottage chic home accessories, textiles and gifts.

Proteas of Hawaii’s gift shop carries a wide variety of handmade pottery pieces from Maui artisans, ocean inspired accessories and island themed ornaments.  Their offerings also include beautiful Hawaiian quilts, art and bold graphic beach blankets.

The bottom right shot contains pottery by one of my favorite Maui potters, Valerie Mizner of Peahi Pottery. Her pieces are the large bowls and small rectangular dishes.

I bought a few pottery pieces as gifts and a whale ornament for my tree.  I vowed to return before Christmas to pick up a protea arrangement for my mom. I’m thinking breakfast at the lodge, a quick photo session of the gorgeous upcountry Maui view and holiday shopping at this gem of a gift shop would be a lovely way to spend a Saturday.

Keep Calm and Shop Local…
