Life is messy; there’s no avoiding it. It can be a beautiful mess at times and a hot mess at others. Having an interest in a creative pursuit, athletic endeavor or the great outdoors can help us through the messiest of messes. So hang onto your paintbrush, pen, ukulele, paddle board or whatever floats your spirit’s boat. Art, music and physical activity won’t solve your problems but can help you feel more connected to your community, improve your self-worth and see the world from a different perspective.
This post was inspired by a conversation I had with my boyfriend recently. A graduate of the school of hard knocks, he hasn’t had the easiest life. We spoke about how important it is in life to channel your energy into something productive. Riding motocross, boogie boarding and stand up paddle keep him on a positive path. Writing and walking help me deal with an imperfect life.
We also spoke about how kids need productive activities available to them for free or at an affordable cost. Due to budgetary constraints, music and art programs in schools are threatened more than ever before. Please support art, music and athletics in our public schools. Also support community programs like the Paia Youth & Cultural Center whose mission is “to provide a safe place emotionally and physically for the youth of Pa’ia and surrounding communities which offers a variety of social, educational, cultural, vocational, and recreational activities”. In addition to social services, the Center also provides a variety of productive recreation to its very important clientele in the form of cooking classes, beach activities, team sports and art projects.
