I spent the afternoon of Black Friday online, browsing Maui handmade jewelry. As I hopped over to Paia’s Wings Hawaii site, I jumped for joy. Wings Hawaii has created its first edition of tableware and I’m in love with each and every piece.
The black images on classic white shapes are reminiscent of the historical bones and botany illustrations used in medicine and natural sciences. The tableware is created by applying over glaze decals and then firing the piece at a high enough temperature to ensure permanency.
My top pick is the garden mug with a sprinkling of garden goodness on the inside and elaborate drawings on the outside. I also adore the jellyfish clamshell and squid dinner plates. The Aloha platter is perfect for serving pupus or as a display on top of a dresser or entryway console.
I’m also pining for the skeleton with angel wings, dreamcatcher, banana tree and artichoke dishes. You can view the entire collection here.
Samantha Howard, Becky Dosh and Melody Torres started Wings Hawaii as students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa by selling their handcrafted jewelry and apparel on campus. They source eco-friendly material and non-toxic inks and supplies for their designs. Their flagship shop on Baldwin Avenue is a must stop for me on any Paia road trip and is a great spot for up-cycled pieces with a bit of history as well as their original printed Ts and shell jewelry. You can shop Wings Hawaii online or at various contemporary boutiques throughout the islands. I bought one of their earlier pieces on Oahu, a necklace, years ago and felt immediately drawn to the Maui collected shells which were wire wrapped onto a simple but organic shaped silver loop. My most recent purchase is a white soft burnout T with a diamond shaped piece of vintage crochet table linen sewn on the side. It is wonderful to see how Wings has grown and expanded their offerings over the years.
