Proteas of Hawaii…The Gift Shop

I took a road trip to Kula Lodge a few weeks ago to run an errand. I was about to leave when I spotted a cute little cottage with pretty landscaping and protea arrangements on the porch.  I took a peek inside expecting a flower shop and and instead found a charming space filled with beach cottage chic home accessories, textiles and gifts.

Proteas of Hawaii’s gift shop carries a wide variety of handmade pottery pieces from Maui artisans, ocean inspired accessories and island themed ornaments.  Their offerings also include beautiful Hawaiian quilts, art and bold graphic beach blankets.

The bottom right shot contains pottery by one of my favorite Maui potters, Valerie Mizner of Peahi Pottery. Her pieces are the large bowls and small rectangular dishes.

I bought a few pottery pieces as gifts and a whale ornament for my tree.  I vowed to return before Christmas to pick up a protea arrangement for my mom. I’m thinking breakfast at the lodge, a quick photo session of the gorgeous upcountry Maui view and holiday shopping at this gem of a gift shop would be a lovely way to spend a Saturday.

OMG, I love these kinds of shop! I love that sea urchin looking candle holder/bowl. First off, I’ve always thought coral looking nicknacks pretty. I don’t know if it’s because we grew up in Hawai’i.

I can’t wait to see the photo shoot. I hope your mom likes the protea arrangements. I mean, what’s there NOT to love, right?

Mom loves proteas and being that we live in Kihei, not upcountry; it is a treat for her to receive. They gave me a loose bunch that day and I could see her face light up when I gave them to her.

I love sea urchin stuff too. Jewelry, candle holders, boxes, LOVE. Jellyfish is another thing I love but harder to find. Coral is so pretty too for sure.

Proteas are South African in origin. There may be a few places on other islands that grow them but most of the protea farms in Hawaii are on Maui, in the upcountry part of the island, Kula. They dry wonderfully too.
