It’s the week before Christmas. So without further adieu, the final buy local holiday gift guide of 2011…
Maui is known for its beautiful and unique protea flowers. Many of the Kula protea farms will gladly ship your order if you’re on another island. This dried protea Hawaiian girl ornament and gorgeous wreath are from Pink Protea in Kula.
Tiffany, the owner of the Bamboo Sky boutique in Honolulu began making these personalized wire wrapped name necklaces with a Swarovski crystal in 2006 as Christmas gifts for her friends. I still remember when Tiffany introduced these in her shop and mine occupies a special place in my jewelry box. You can pick gold filled or sterling silver and your choice of crystal. Unfortunately, the Bamboo Sky website does require a two week turnaround but I thought it was still worth a mention.
Maui Hands represents over 300 artists, jewelers, artisans, woodworkers and potters in Hawaii. This beautiful sashimi/sushi plate set is just one of their many made in Hawaii offerings and is the creation of Bob Hoenig.
Maui Preserved buys all local produce, most of it organic and makes jellies, hot sauce and preserves. This Maui pickled sweet onion would be a simple but special side dish. Maui Preserved will be at the Maui swap meet on Christmas eve for all you last minute shoppers…or if you’re ahead of the game, pick up a jar or two for yourself.
Native Books, Na Mea Hawaii is a wonderful source for Hawaii authors including cultural history, crafts, cookbooks and…ghost stories. The late Glen Grant was a master storyteller, in prose as well as in speech. He wrote numerous books, held Honolulu ghost walks and also had a very popular radio show. The Obake Files is still one of my favorite books today.
We all know Malika Dudley as our favorite Hawaii meteorologist (just follow her on twitter and you’ll see why). But did you also know she loves to gather shells and make jewelry? Check out her esty store here.
Other Buy Local tips…
Longs and Times Market carry a variety of locally made candies, coffees, sauce or Hawaiian salt. Costco also stocks Hawaii made candy and an assortment of books by Hawaii authors and publishers.
Whole Foods Market’s offers Maui wine and liquor as well as locally made goat cheese and other food products.
Many womens’ boutiques take pride in their assortment of locally made jewelry. On Maui, Billie Js, Nuage Bleu, Tamara Catz and Alice in Hulaland are some of my favorite go tos for unique pieces.
Check out the local art galleries for original art or prints by local artists.
Pictures Plus carries photography, prints and frames featuring Hawaii photographers and artists.
Picture it Framed takes their scraps from custom framing and makes gorgeous pre-made frames in standard sizes.
Kula Country Farms carries locally grown sustainable produce and Jeff’s Jams & Jellies (sauces too!), the perfect items to fill a gift basket.
A gift certificate from many of our wonderful Pacific Rim or chefs using the best in local produce, beef and seafood is always appreciated.
