I attended an all day workshop today presented by High Tech Maui, Social Media Bootcamp. What’s social media? Social media is communication, interaction and dialogue via web and mobile based technologies. Facebook, twitter, yelp, flickr, linked in and blogs, just to name a few.
Social media has changed the way we network, socialize, shop, date and job search, forever. The video above is based on the bestselling Socialnomics by Erik Qualman, a stunning visual presentation of the tremendous impact social media has had on our world…so far.
We no longer email long time friends, we facebook. Professional networking isn’t limited to a monthly brown bag meeting in a rented conference room, it’s gone real time on twitter. Yelp brings new meaning to the saying, “everyone’s a critic”, giving us word of mouth from consumers like ourselves on services and dining. Youtube has become the new demo video for many aspiring musicians or singers.
Why am I interested in social media? As a business professional and volunteer, understanding the impact social media has on customer service, networking, marketing and event planning is invaluable. As a writer, networking with other writers inspires, motivates and gives me the knowledge I need to get published and represented. As a blogger, social media is key to getting my content out to potential readers. As a daughter, sister, friend and loved one, social media is the way I keep my ties intact and provide support and accolades on a daily basis to those who matter most.
